2013 Kentucky Derby Odds, Winning History, & Fun!

It seems like just last week we were anxiously waiting for the Belmont Stakes in hopes that I'll Have Another could complete the first Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978.  As fate would have it the Triple Crown was not meant to be and I'll Have Another was pulled from the race with an injury.  Now we embark on a new journey.  Tomorrow will mark the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, KYLouisville has already had the pleasure of crowning a national champion in college basketball and just 1 month later the city finds itself amidst intense excitement once again.

The Kentucky Derby has long been one of the most exciting events in sports and this year will be no different.  The field appears to be wide open with a the usual group favorites.  I have provided our readers with odds and post position for each of the Derby contestants.

1.Black Onyx50-1
4.Golden Soul50-1
5.Normandy Invasion12-1
7.Giant Fish50-1
10.Palace Malice20-1
11.Lines of Battle30-1
13.Falling Sky50-1
15.Charming Kitten20-1
17.Will Take Charge20-1
18.Frac Daddy50-1
19.Java's War15-1

Clearly, the coolest name on the board is Frac Daddy.  I can't even explain why I like it so much.  Frac Daddy just sounds like a horse that can get the job done.  However, my winning pick for the 2013 Kentucky Derby will be Itsmyluckyday for the simple fact that eventually it just has to be my lucky day.  Lets take a look and see which starting positions have been the most successful since 1900.

Most Wins:  Position 1 & Position 5  (12)
Second Most Wins:  Position 4  (11)
Third Most Wins:  Position 8 & Position 10  (10)

Least Wins:  Position 17  (0)
Second Least Wins:  Position 19 & Position 20  (1)

I think its crazy that a horse has never won the Kentucky Derby from the 17th post position.  This year Will Take Charge will take 20-1 odds from the 17th post position.  Could this be the year?  Also, last year was the first time since 1900 that a horse from the 19th post position won the race.

Another interesting thing to watch will be Black Onyx in the 1st position.  Historically, as seen above, the 1st position is a great spot to be in.  However, a horse has not won from the 1st position since 1988 (Winning Colors).

Orb is currently the favorite according to the odds.  Orb is starting in the 16th post position and the last winner from that position was Animal Kingdom in 2011.  It makes me wonder how much starting position affects the odds or if it does at all.  Only 4 horses since 1900 have claimed victory from the 16th position but 3 of those wins have taken place in the last 20 years.

Goldencents had 5-1 odds and it is important to note that Rick Pitino, coach of the 2013 NCAA Champion Louisville Cardinals, is a 5% owner of the horse.  It could be an omen for good things to come.  4 times since 1990 the winner has come from the 8th post position.  The last to do so was Mine That Bird in 2009.

So when you are watching the Derby this weekend and you say to yourself, "Self, I would love to go to the Kentucky Derby"....  Realize that you can turn your day dreams into a reality because packages are already available for next year. Check it out!

Enjoy the Kentucky Derby weekend folks and be safe.
